Chateau Marmont Hollywood Handbook: Inside Hollywood’s Most Storied Hotel

The bestselling Chateau Marmont Hollywood Handbook, the authoritative history of the legendary, star-studded Sunset Boulevard hotel, is finally back in print for the first time since 1996. Copies will officially be available on February 4.

The iconic Chateau Marmont, located at 8221 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, California, has long been a haven for Hollywood celebrities, musicians, and artists. Since its opening in 1929, the West Hollywood hotel has been the setting for both glamorous and sometimes even scandalous stories. Originally published in 1996, this book is one of many non-fiction and fictionalised accounts of the famed hotspot, including titles such as Shawn Levy’s The Castle in Sunset and Life at the Marmont. However, The Chateau Marmont Handbook, featuring contributions from insiders deeply connected to the hotel’s lore, is regarded as the most insightful and comprehensive chronicle of its history.

This cult classic is edited by Chateau Marmont’s owner himself, André Balazs. It includes contributions from a multitude of literary icons, including William Faulkner, Lilian Ross, Budd Schulberg, Gore Vidal, Jay McInerney, Dominick Dunne, and Anthony Haden-Guest. The book is further enriched by stunning photography from none other than Helmut Newton, Dennis Hopper, Annie Leibovitz, Jack Pierson, and Wolfgang Tillman.

Balazs, a visionary in the world of hospitality, has created some of the most influential and sought-after hotels in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and London. His distinctive approach, seen in renowned establishments such as The Mercer, The Raleigh, The Standard Hotel Group, and Chiltern Firehouse, can all be traced back to the philosophy honed during the restoration of Chateau Marmont.

More than just a hotel, The Chateau Marmont has been a creative hub, inspiring a wealth of films, music, and literature. The Chateau Marmont Handbook captures this rich history through firsthand testimonies, archival materials, and striking visuals, offering readers an intimate look at the stories and figures that have shaped its legacy. With its long-awaited reissue, this esteemed book is finally accessible to a new generation of readers.
