After a whirlwind start to 2024, with a debut album, major live shows, and a steady rise as one of Australia’s brightest pop voices, Kita Alexander shows no signs of slowing down. With her heartfelt new single “Press Pause” and a run of exciting tour dates ahead, the singer-songwriter opens up about finding balance, staying grounded in a fast-paced world, and what’s inspiring her next chapter.
You’ve had such a powerful start to 2024—with a debut album and a string of huge live dates. How are you balancing all of this with your personal life?
I had honestly planned for 2025 to be a quiet year—writing my next album and enjoying some downtime. It’s turned out to be the opposite, and I’m loving it. Balancing it with family life is definitely tricky, but I couldn’t do it without my husband holding down the fort at home.
Your songs often explore love, growth, and vulnerability. Have any recent personal experiences or life chapters especially shaped your songwriting?
Lately, I’ve been really inspired to go deeper within myself, exploring my internal world more than just the relationships around me. It’s been a new layer of honesty in my writing.
When you’re not in the studio or on tour, what helps you recharge or stay creatively inspired?
I need sleep and space to recharge. Honestly, being bored is essential for creativity. With such a high-paced family and work life, it’s hard to find those empty moments. But I’m learning to grab micro-moments of stillness—whether it’s looking out the car window without music or podcasts, or lying in bed without reading or watching anything. It might sound boring, and I don’t always manage it, but calming my mind into boredom is often what leads me back to inspiration.
“Press Pause” feels so personal and comforting. Was there a specific moment or person that sparked the song?
Definitely—there were real personal moments with friends and family that inspired it. But I also wrote it as a message to myself: not to get carried away into the future or stuck in the past. Bringing it back to the present moment always feels best. If you’re alive and breathing, you’re doing okay.
You’ve said the song is about “holding space for someone in chaos.” Has anyone ever done that for you in a way that shaped how you write or connect through music?
One of my best girlfriends constantly surprises me with how beautifully she holds space for me, whether I need to vent, cry, or just be. Everyone needs someone like that. She was definitely part of the inspiration behind this song.
Your music has racked up over 300 million streams—congrats! How do you feel about navigating the streaming world, especially in such a fast-paced digital space?
It’s crazy! But honestly, you have to embrace the changes or you’ll get left behind. To me, it is what it is. I just try to keep growing, evolving, and finding my way through it.

Do you think streaming platforms give enough room for emotional or reflective tracks like “Press Pause,” or do you ever feel pressured to chase trends?
If anything, I think streaming actually gives songs like Press Pause more life. Tracks that might not have been radio hits can find their audience over time. Someone might discover Press Pause ten years from now—and I love that that’s possible.
Supporting Dua Lipa on her Radical Optimism tour must’ve been incredible. What was it like sharing the stage with someone who’s become such a global icon?
It was the best! I’m so inspired by her. Getting to play before she came on each night was a real privilege—and you better believe I reminded myself of that during every set.
Any standout backstage moments or lessons you picked up from watching Dua perform?
One that really stuck with me was seeing her take the time to hug my kids before going on stage. She was so kind, so present—like she had all the time in the world, even in the middle of this massive production.
You’ve already collaborated with artists like FISHER and Morgan Evans. Dream collaboration—if you could work with absolutely anyone?
I’ve been manifesting working with Flume since I was about 15, and I’m still manifesting it! Not giving up on that one.
You’re quickly becoming one of Australia’s brightest pop voices. Where do you hope to take your sound next—any genre twists or unexpected directions we can look forward to?
Right now, I’m really focused on getting back to where I started—with my guitar and a notebook in my bedroom. I’m so inspired by country songwriting, and you’ll definitely hear that influence, but I don’t think it’ll be a huge genre shift. It’s more about bringing guitars back to the front of what I do.
You’re playing The Great Escape and headlining Camden Assembly soon—how are you feeling about performing for UK audiences?
These will actually be my second and third shows in the UK, and I’m so excited to start building my fanbase there. I’m more excited than ever to get back and connect with fans on the other side of the world.
What can fans expect from your live shows? Any surprises or special moments you’re planning for the UK crowd?
I’ll definitely cook something up! But honestly, my main focus is to bring the music, connect, and share the realness with people who haven’t seen me live before.
