At a time where staying connected is more important than ever, House of Solo has launched ‘Party of One’, a series providing intimate insight into how your favourite artists are dealing with isolation and what we can expect from them during lockdown.
Up next in the series we have Sam Fischer, an Australian born artist who wrote for the likes of Demi Lovato and Ciara before deciding it was his turn front and centre. Since making the switch, Sam has been touring with Lewis Capaldi and earning himself major success with his single: ‘This City,’ which has already amassed over 100 million streams and 1 billion views on TikTok. Below we discuss his inspiration for the track, which explores his experience of the lonely side of LA living.
First of all, how are you holding up?
I’m doing alright I think! I have good and bad days, and on the bad days it gets a little harder to be kind and understanding to myself but I’m only human. I’m trying to take every day as it comes, be as creative as possible, be grateful for all I have and not get too lost in all I’m not able to do because of this. So I’m holding up!
Where are you isolating? And with whom?
I’ve been isolating in LA with my wife. Bless her, she’s married to a moody one, but if it wasn’t for her I’d be a wreck. We’re a good team, she’s my best friend and we laugh a lot.
What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced since the outbreak and how have you overcome it?
I think the biggest challenge for me has been mental. I’m pretty hard on myself as it is and with the outbreak you’re forced to be with yourself a ton and I’m learning there are parts of myself that I don’t love as much as I thought I did, patience being a big one. I’m working on being more accepting of my faults and asking for help when I need it. I’m grateful I have such an incredible team around me.
You released a remix of the song ‘This City’ on February 21st. What made you decide to re-release the 2019 track and how have you navigated the release and the outbreak of COVID-19?
COVID-19 has changed the game for releases because we’re now limited in what we can do for promo but thankfully I have an amazing team who are working harder than ever to keep the momentum going. This City is the little song that could for me. Releasing in 2018, re-releasing in 2019 and to see what’s happening now in 2020, I’m taking it one day at a time because it all feels like a freak accident and I don’t want to take anything for granted.
How are you finding live streaming gigs? You’ve said in a previous interview that you “live and die on stage”, how does the virtual stage compare?
Haha wow I’m dramatic. I miss being on stage more than anything. Having tours cancelled hasn’t been a fun reality but I’m glad I’m still able to keep playing for my fans, even if after each song it’s just silence in the room. I think the live streaming is great right now, I’ve been able to test out the new music and the comment section is always fire, but I absolutely can’t wait to get back on a stage in front of an audience.

How has it changed the interactions with your fans?
I feel like we’re talking more than ever. Seeing as I’m home all day every day now, all I want is to interact with people, so I appreciate every single message, comment and tweet. In a way it makes you feel a little less alone.
How important do you think it is for artists to be doing live streams during this time in isolation?
I think it’s a great thing that artists are doing live streams, it’s an amazing way to hang out with your fans and I enjoy them but honestly, I don’t think it’s a bad thing if you’re not doing them. Right now everyone’s just trying to do their best to cope with this new reality, so if getting on a livestream isn’t your thing, then no dramas.
What are you planning on working on during this strange time?
I’m really focused right now on the new music. There’s a lot of it coming so having the time to finish the project and start planning releases and content, whilst figuring out how to do that from isolation, has been really exciting.
Are you planning on learning or developing any skills?
I’m trying to learn how to cook. I’m a trash chef and usually only go as far as boiling water for making pasta, if you ask me to cook meat I’m afraid for all of our lives. My wife is an amazing cook, she smashes a pad thai from scratch like it’s nothing, so it’s time for me to step it up and figure out if it’s me or just a lack of experience.
What are you doing to make sure your spirits stay up?
Other than day drinking, watching RuPaul’s Drag Race and writing, I’ve been watching this tiktoker called Paradise Bartender. She’s just so happy and peppy while making these amazing cocktails, it’s infectious. Definitely check her out, she’s an icon.
What music are you listening to to get you through?
My favorite song right now is ‘Sometimes’ by H.E.R., it’s perfect. And really any and everything by H.E.R.. Also a bit of Sasha Sloan, Mac Miller, Kehlani, Alec Benjamin and Dua Lipa. It’s a solid mix.
What’s the first thing you’re going to do when isolation is over?
As soon as this is all over, I don’t want to be anywhere near my apartment for a long time. I want to play all the shows and meet all the fans, hug people, go to dinner with friends, travel as much as I can and really just continue living my life as freely as possible.
