Dior has just announced its ninth Lady Dior Art Project. A tradition the French company holds, giving international artists the freedom and creativity to transform their iconic – Lady Dior handbag created in 1995. This is an annual affair and by the end, there are 30 unique, breathtaking pieces available.
The eleven creatives from this year are from a variety of backgrounds and countries. This is one aspect of the project that unintentionally brings people together. It presents diversity and handfuls of cultures through fashion and art, making it popular and educational among their audience. This year’s artists are: Danielle McKinney, Huang Yuxing, Jeffrey Gibson, Liang Yuanwei, Sara Flores, Vaugh Spann, Duh Anh Nhan, Woo Kukwon, Hayal Pozanti, Anna Weyant and Faith Ringgold.
Anna Weyant, Sara Flores, and Woo Kukwon have made the bag their own by adding their own, special artistic flair – Weyant is known for her use of wood grains and caught the fashion industry’s attention when she was asked to paint Kaia Gerber for Vogue this November. Sara Flores uses the inspiration from her Indigenous community’s artistic world and Woo Kukwon finds passion through the animals in his life.
Duy Anh Nhan Duc’s approach to his artwork is unique as he uses plants and nature to aid his work. Mostly focusing on flowers such as dandelions, salsify, and thistles, his Lady Dior bag has a vegan finish. The handle also has a golden vine sitting around it to emphasize his love for nature and art as a joint concept.
One of the most well known artists from this collection is Faith Ringgold. Born in 1930 and sadly passing this April, her aim was to bring attention on racial issues and the constant gender inequality battle. One of her iconic quotes: “Anyone can fly, all you gotta do is try” is featured within her Lady Dior bag, inside the handles.
The Lady Dior Art Project recognises Dior’s aims to test the boundaries of fashion and use art as a medium of expression.
