BE:FIRST [英訳版]: A NEW ERA OF J-POP WITH GLOBAL VISION

From their origin as contestants on the reality series THE FIRST to becoming one of Japan’s most promising musical exports, BE:FIRST have grown into a symbol of next-generation pop fueled by creative grit, global ambition, and the kind of tight-knit camaraderie that can only be built under pressure. In just three short years, the seven-member group has evolved beyond their beginnings, setting the tone for a new wave of J-pop infused with bold sonic experimentation and deep cultural pride.

The group’s latest single, “GRIT,” arrives like a declaration. Pulsing with bass-heavy aggression, unapologetic lyrics, and intense visual flair, the track not only signals a new creative direction but also offers a glimpse into the kind of music BE:FIRST have long aspired to make. RYUHEI explains, “This song is filled with respect for the bass-heavy, effects-driven tracks from the late ’90s to early 2000s. It also represents a new direction for BE:FIRST and is one of the musical styles we’ve always wanted to explore.”

Long before they were headlining tours and releasing genre-blurring singles, the members of BE:FIRST were simply young artists vying for a chance to debut as a group. The high-pressure environment of THE FIRST didn’t just test their skills it forged a bond that remains at the core of the group’s dynamic today. “By the final stage of the audition, everyone who remained already had strong bonds, no matter who we were paired with,” JUNON recalls. “After that, we supported each other through a very intense and busy schedule, which made our connection even stronger.”

That sense of unity extends beyond the stage. Now deep into their first world tour, BE:FIRST World Tour 2025 – Who Is BE:FIRST?, the group is learning how to balance the thrill of global stages with the demands of life on the road. “Each country has its own way of getting hyped, supporting us, and enjoying the show,” JUNON shares. “It’s been a completely new experience and a great learning opportunity.” In between performances, they’ve carved out moments of calm—sightseeing, sampling local culture, and finding time to breathe amid the chaos.

Cultural storytelling is a key pillar of BE:FIRST’s identity. Their work is a deliberate blend of Japanese aesthetics and international sensibilities reflected most clearly in their music videos and stage visuals. “The delicacy of Japanese culture has something in common with modern hip-hop,” says RYUHEI. “The traditional wa Japanese elements are a deep part of our culture, but I also believe showcasing Japan’s advanced visual technology is equally important.”

Since their inception, the group has had a steady guide in SKY-HI, both a celebrated artist in his own right and the visionary behind their formation. “As an artist himself, our CEO has a fair and respectful mindset, and we really feel his powerful support as a producer,” RYUHEI says. It is this guidance that has given the group space to grow not only as a unit but as individuals. RYUHEI’s solo track “Loop,” featured on the latest project alongside the group track “Muchu夢中,” speaks to that duality. “Because we usually work as a group, being able to create music independently helps us realize how enjoyable and important the solo creative process is.”

Their musical inspirations are wide-ranging and deeply personal. For RYUHEI, one standout influence is the R&B group Blackstreet, whose blend of vocal precision and groove left a lasting mark. But as far as collaboration dreams go, the list remains open, shaped more by energy and artistry than genre or geography.

When asked about their ambitions beyond the charts, JUNON’s answer is grounded yet expansive. “As a group, I hope that we’ll be able to share our music with even more people around the world. And even if we all start pursuing solo careers in the future, I believe our goals and destination will remain the same.” BE:FIRST isn’t chasing trends, they’re building a foundation meant to last.

Their pre-show rituals reflect that same balance of intention and instinct. While routines may vary among the members, one constant is their team huddle before hitting the stage, a moment to regroup, align and move forward together. In today’s fast-paced, algorithm-driven music industry, BE:FIRST embraces the digital shift not as a challenge but as a tool. As RYUHEI notes, “What’s great about this era is that it’s become easier to find the path you should be pursuing.”

Fashion also plays a key role in how the group presents itself. Whether it’s bold stagewear or everyday off-duty looks, the members are hands-on in crafting their image. “Ease of movement and how the outfit looks when dancing are priorities,” says JUNON, “but I believe choosing outfits that match the tone of the song, staging, and our own style is really important.” If given the chance to collaborate with any designer, RYUHEI doesn’t hesitate: Alessandro Michele, for his fearlessness and flair.

Despite their polished image and growing fame, the members of BE:FIRST remain dreamers at heart. After recently watching the UEFA Champions League final, JUNON laughs while admitting he’d still love to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a footballer. And if stranded on a desert island? “I’d buy a boat so I can get home quickly and enjoy a proper meal!”

Looking back, the group’s first dome tour in Japan still stands as a career-defining moment. “I want to do it again in the future,” JUNON says. “And I hope that this world tour we’re currently on will become a meaningful turning point for us.”

What does it mean to be part of BE:FIRST today? For RYUHEI, it’s a path to creation and connection. “Through this world tour, I’ve met so many BESTY from around the world, and it made me want even more people to hear our songs. I want to be involved in even more creative work as a member of BE:FIRST.”

As they continue to tour, record, and expand their reach, BE:FIRST aren’t just growing into their name, they’re earning it. They’re not just the first of their kind; they’re setting the pace for what’s next.
