Louis Vuitton’s latest travel launch feels like a full-circle moment for the Maison. With the unveiling of Horizon Aluminium, the House introduces its first aluminium suitcase, marking 10 years of its collaboration with industrial designer Marc Newson. The release builds on the original Horizon suitcase first launched in 2016, a design that has since become one of Louis Vuitton’s most recognisable modern travel icons.
The new Horizon Aluminium brings together Louis Vuitton’s travel heritage with Newson’s precise, futuristic design language. Aluminium is not only central to Newson’s own work, but also links back to the House’s history, when Louis Vuitton created aluminium trunks for explorers at the end of the 19th century.
What makes the suitcase especially interesting is the way the Monogram becomes more than a visual signature. Embossed directly into the aluminium shell, the motif also reinforces the structure of the case, turning one of fashion’s most recognisable codes into a functional design element.
The engineering is equally discreet. Horizon Aluminium is described as the first rivet-free aluminium suitcase on the market, with concealed hinges, an ultra-thin frame system and a single-piece shell designed to preserve the purity of its silhouette.
Inside, the suitcase is built around modern travel needs, with an external trolley system that allows for a flatter main compartment, enlarged wheels for smoother movement, TSA-certified locks and leather details on the corners and handles. A matching Vanity Case carries the same aluminium Monogram finish and technical design language.
Perhaps most aligned with the spirit of true luxury is the emphasis on longevity. The lining can be removed in-store for repairs, while leather elements can be restored or replaced, reinforcing the idea that this is not a suitcase for one season, but a travel companion designed to age with its owner.
For Louis Vuitton, Horizon Aluminium is more than luggage. It is a continuation of the House’s Art of Travel — high-tech, beautifully restrained and built for those who understand that the journey starts before you even leave the house.
